Homemade Mexican Guacamole

If there is anything more popular in Mexican cuisine than tacos and nachos, it definitely has to be Guacamole, hands down. Though it originated in Mexico, its popularity spread beyond the country's borders and eventually has become an international sensation.

This quick appetizer can easily be whipped up in a few minutes with a handful of simple ingredients.
Classic Guacamole is a delicious blend of perfectly ripe avocados, fresh tomatoes, onions, lime juice and fresh cilantro. Plain and simple!
Full of flavors and freshness, this version tastes just like the tableside guacamole made at your favorite Mexican restaurant.

IS GUACAMOLE HEALTHY?

Absolutely! Guacamole is made primarily with avocados that contain healthy fats called monounsaturated fats which keeps your heart healthy. They are also a great source of folate, fiber, potassium and vitamins and keeps you full and satiated for a long time. So, when made at home, guacamole can definitely be part of a healthy diet.

HOW TO KEEP GUACAMOLE FROM TURNING BROWN?

Guacamole is always better when made fresh or just a few hours ahead of time. When avocados are allowed to oxidize through exposure to air, they turn brown which makes the guacamole look a lot less appealing. To prevent guacamole from turning brown, add a half teaspoon of lime juice on top, cover the guacamole tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to two hours. Make sure you bring it to room temperature before serving.

HOW TO SERVE GUACAMOLE

My favorite way to serve this guacamole is as an appetizer with tortilla chips. It is also a great accompiment to Mexican inspired meals. Add it to the burrito bowls, tacos, and quesadillas.

TIPS FOR MAKING THE BEST GUACAMOLE

Here are a few simple things you can do to take your guacamole to the next level.
  • CHOOSE THE RIGHT AVOCADOS: Avocados are a vital part of guacamole, as they give it its defining flavor and texture. The key to making a creamy guacamole is choosing the right avocados with the perfect ripeness. Look for ripe, but not over-ripe ones. Avoid the ones that feel mushy or have deep indentations.
  • DON'T BE AFRAID OF SQUEEZING THOSE LIMES: Lime juice is an essential ingredient in guacamole, and helps to cut through the fattiness of the avocados. Adding a significant amount of lime juice also has the added bonus of helping to keep the guacamole green for much longer.
  • SEASONING IS THE KEY: Salt enhances the flavors and brings everything together, so a generous hand with the salt is essential to a delicious guacamole.
